CORNING, Calif. - When dining at the Rock and Brews restaurant at the Rolling Hills Casino, you will see robots cruising around.

The robots are not intended to replace staff but they are simply there to help out while the restaurant doesn’t have enough people to work.

“It is a sophisticated piece of equipment, and it is temperamental,” said the director of food and beverage for the casino, Scott Simon. “It has a personality."

After experiencing staffing shortages due to various reasons, the casino brought in these robots to help out.

Waitress Nicole Eddy said the robots are always there to lend a helping hand.

“When we are short-staffed and we can’t be running out the orders as fast as we can,” said Eddy. “The robots play a vital part in that.”

“You don’t have to tip a robot so it makes it a really good partner for staff as well,” said Simon.“It is a sophisticated piece of equipment, and it is temperamental,” said the director of food and beverage for the casino, Scott Simon. “It has a personality."

Waitress Nicole Eddy said the robots are always there to lend a helping hand.

One of the most helpful features of the robot is it will assist staff in taking dirty dishes back to the kitchen and it will also go to table to sing happy birthday.

“They are very entertaining, and they are very useful as well,” said Eddy.

The roughly $40,000 robots can hold about 20 pounds per shelf and are programmed by zones that have been mapped out in the restaurant.

When a staff member wants it to go in a specific zone, they touch the screen and direct the robots where to go.

Customers coming in to eat at the restaurant said they are fascinated by the bots.

“Everybody loves them,” said Eddy. "I have customers right now that are completely intrigued by them.”

Even when they can hire more people, the restaurant plans to keep the robots around.

Right now, the restaurant has two of these robots. One helps with to-go orders and the other helps with bussing tables.

There are 16 Rock and Brews throughout the country and the location inside of the casino is the first to have robots.
